The Neighbours (Final Year Project)
The Gillies are an extraordinary family living apart from a conceited neighbourhood when they mysteriously lose their magical powers. As a rare event approaches, they must uncover the cause and overcome obstacles to restore their abilities before time runs out.
For my Final Year Project in my Year 2 in Performance Production (PFP), I took the roles of both the Director and an Actor. The play was inspired by The Addams Family, a story I have always loved since childhood, and I wanted to create my own interpretation while preserving its dark humour and eccentric tone. This project allowed me to explore how stylised characters and atmosphere could be adapted into an original piece.
Stepping into the role of the director was a new and challenging experience for me. Throughout the process, I learned the importance of collaboration and open-mindedness, particularly in listening to and considering my classmates' feedback. Allowing space for different perspectives helped strengthen the creative outcome and pushed the production beyond my initial vision.
My biggest challenge I faced during this was ensuring strong coordination between all the departments, lighting, sound, multimedia, and the cast. I had to constantly communicate my vision, making sure that all technical elements complemented the performers and worked cohesively to support the storytelling. Through this experience, I developed a deeper understanding of multidisciplinary collaboration and grew more confident in leading a creative team.
